Equal Pay for Equal Work
Hard work should be rewarded – so it’s up to all of us to make sure rural women come out on top in the wage wars.
We were brought up to believe that hard work ought to be rewarded – so let’s end the wage wars on rural women right now.
Each year when Equal Pay Day rolls around, it reminds us how far into the year the average woman must work to earn what the average man did in the previous year – around 90 extra days.
In other terms, women in the U.S. still earn only about $0.84 for every dollar that a man earns. Even less if you’re a seasonal or part-time worker – which account for nearly ⅓ of all working women. And for women in tribal communities, it’s even less than that.
22% of American women live in rural areas. They’re moms, caretakers, and workers, and they’re trying to raise families and care for aging parents in the middle of enormous economic challenges. At the very least, they deserve to be confident that they’re getting a fair paycheck every single pay day.
So that’s why we’re working to invest in our people by demanding nothing less than equal pay for equal work.
Everybody deserves the dignity of a livelihood that allows us to provide for our families. So, we’re going to advocate with a ferocity for every issue that tangibly improves the lives of rural women and their communities – from energy and infrastructure jobs to rural internet expansion and everything in between.
Thanks for being here as we fight to make sure rural women are heard, understood, and represented in Washington, D.C. We’ve still got a long road ahead to correct the wrongs of the past, but we’re moving forward toward a fairer future together!
